Hallmarks are the symbols applied to different metal types once tested to assure customers of a metals fineness.
I have always been drawn to the aesthetic qualities of these symbols and their historical relevance. In 2021 I designed my Golden Futures range as part of the GCDC competition to showcase these symbols and heroise them as central to the design. These studs are additions to this original collection and celebrate the history of the jewellery industry in the UK.
They are available either with a crown (symbol for gold), or a leopard head (symbol for London). Sold here as a single or pair so you can mix and match with other GSJ studs.
The standard hallmarks for every piece are as follows:
Sponsors Mark - Initials of the maker, laid out in a unique border.
Fineness Mark - The metal type, eg. 585 for 14ct gold or 950 for platinum
Assay Office Mark - The city it was tested and marked in. London’s symbol is the leopard as seen here.
Optional hallmarks:
Fineness Mark - The metal type, eg. gold is symbolised by a crown and platinum an orb.
Date Mark - The date it was made, eg X for 2022
